Is truth found in eternal, unauthored texts, or must it be tested through lived human experience?
In 7th-century India, a fierce intellectual war erupted. Thinkers clashed not with swords, but with logic, trying to answer one vital question: How do we know what is truly real?
Kumārila Bhaṭṭa arose as the champion of ancient tradition. He argued that ultimate truth is eternal, unauthored, and preserved perfectly in the sacred texts of the Vedas.
His rival, the brilliant Buddhist philosopher Dharmakīrti, rejected ancient dogmas. He asserted that truth is not written in stone—it must be tested through practical human experience.
Kumārila proposed a radical idea: intrinsic validity. He argued that every experience is true by default, unless it is actively proven false by a subsequent experience or defect.
To protect truth from human bias, Kumārila claimed the Vedas were unauthored. Without a human creator, they were completely free from human error, prejudice, and limitation.
Dharmakīrti countered with the test of causal efficacy. Does water quench your thirst? Does fire burn? If a belief does not lead to successful practical action, it is not true.
For the Buddhists, everything in the universe is in constant flux. If something is truly eternal and unchanging, they argued, it cannot act or produce any real effect in our world.
Kumārila argued we have direct, inner access to an eternal soul. Dharmakīrti countered that the self is merely a conventional label for a continuous stream of fleeting mental events.
Kumārila mocked the idea of human omniscience, arguing no human could know everything. Dharmakīrti replied that the Buddha's authority came from cultivating compassion and wisdom.
Though legends say they met in high-stakes duels where losers faced death, their real battlefield was textual, exchanging brilliant counter-arguments across generations.
This ancient clash remains vital today. Do we trust inherited authority, or do we demand empirical proof? The choice between dogma and experience is still ours to make.
